Quick practical post today for anyone who’s been trying to get one of the free One Word buttons for their blog sidebar.
The buttons are available until the end of January — after that I’ll be taking them down so they don’t become outdated floating around the internet forever.
Step-by-step instructions
- Go to the buttons post and choose the colour you’d like
- Right-click the button image and select “Save image as” — save it to your computer
- Upload it to your blog as you would any image (in Blogger: Layout > Add a Gadget > Image)
- When it asks for a link, put the URL of the buttons post (or the main One Word category page)
- That’s it! Your button is live.
If you’re on WordPress.com rather than a self-hosted blog, the process is similar but you’ll find the widget section in your dashboard under Appearance > Widgets. Add a Text widget and put the image code inside it. If you had trouble downloading the buttons previously, see the important note about the free One Word buttons and a fix for broken download links that some readers encountered.
If you’re getting stuck, leave a comment with what platform you’re on and I’ll try to help.
Why link back?
The button is completely free — I don’t ask anything in return. But linking back to the post rather than just displaying the image means that people who see the button on your blog can click through to find out what the One Word Challenge is and join in. That’s the whole point of sharing it: community. The more people who find the challenge, the more people who might benefit from it. If you’re still deciding on your word, you can read a full guide on how to choose a word of the year, including more than 100 word ideas organised by theme.
Thank you to everyone who’s already put the button up. It’s lovely to see our little community spreading across the internet. You can also link up your One Word 2013 introduction post to share your word with the rest of the community.
