September is coming, which means spring is coming, which means — if you’re anything like me — a sudden urge to throw open every window, drag things out of cupboards, and pretend you’re going to be a different, more organised person from here on in.
Welcome to spring cleaning season, Australian edition.
I’ve made a free printable spring cleaning checklist that covers the whole house, room by room. It’s comprehensive without being overwhelming, which is a balance I’ve spent considerable time trying to achieve.

A checklist for every room in the house, plus an outdoor section.
What’s included
- Kitchen — defrost the freezer, clean oven racks, wipe down cupboard fronts, clear expired pantry items, clean rangehood filter
- Bathrooms — scrub grout, re-caulk if needed, clean exhaust fans, clear out old toiletries
- Bedrooms — rotate and flip mattresses, wash doonas and pillows, clean skirting boards, clear under-bed storage
- Living areas — clean light fittings, wash curtains, vacuum behind furniture, clean windows inside and out
- Laundry — clean washing machine drum, check hoses, clear lint trap in dryer, organise shelves
- Outdoors — clean outdoor furniture, check garden hoses, clear gutters, wipe down letterbox
My spring cleaning philosophy
Don’t do it all in a day. Seriously. Spread it across a few weekends, do one room properly at a time, and actually finish before moving to the next. A half-spring-cleaned house is somehow worse than one that hasn’t been touched since autumn. If you find the process brings on a bigger urge to simplify and sort, these quick decluttering tips for overwhelmed mums are a practical companion to work through alongside your cleaning.
Also: get the children involved. Even small ones can wipe skirting boards and sort toy boxes. They’re not thrilled about it, but they’ll survive, and it teaches them that homes require maintenance — a lesson worth learning early. If you want to build on that sense of shared responsibility, it pairs beautifully with simple family traditions that kids will actually remember long after the cleaning is done.
Happy spring cleaning! I hope your windows sparkle and your linen cupboard becomes briefly organised.
